Call Me Tonight was made in 1986 and was the first in a series of fanservice OVA's from Pink Noise in the mid 80s. While most shows that use fan service as it's core are often shallow and repetive, Call Me Tonight breaks the mould and makes it's an integral part of it's heart warming and comical story. Infact i loved the story and characters so much that i've watched this anime quite a number of times now. Although it only has a short running time of only 30 minutes, i actually felt it was the perfect length and achieved everything it set out to do.
Visually this is a very beautiful anime and defintly one of my favourites to look at. The character designs and colour pallete seem to be almost a combination of Megazone 23 (Part I) and Dirty Pair. The soundtrack is mainly upbeat 80's style jazzy J-Pop with the standout theme being the song 'Please Call Me Tonight' which plays at both the very start and end of the OVA.
Sadly like so many other great OVA's of it's time this title has not been reissued for release on dvd in Japan. I do expect this anime to get released eventually though as most of the AIC catalogue is gradually finding it's way out on to dvd slowly but surely.
Overall i would personally say that this is once again a personal favourite of mine. It is one of the few shows daring enough to blend an unique variety of genres including romance, comedy, science fiction and horror. Also with the bonus of it being a one shot OVA, it makes great replay value with very little time commitment needed. Infact I recommend all Pink Noise OVA's especially Body Jack (OVA 4) which comes in a close second place to Call Me Tonight.

Dream Hunter Rem is an very original and unique anime 3 episode OVA series released from 1985 to 1987. It is about a character called Rem AyanokÅji who is a dream hunter. She is a woman capable of entering the dreams of sleeping people in an attempt to extinguish the demons causing the nightmares. Perhaps one of the most fascinating aspects of Dream Hunter Rem are the educational Dream Sequences that feature in the middle of each OVA. The show is also very diverse in it's execution shifting between many genres such as fantasy, horror, romance and drama.
Unfortunately you won't be able to see the diversity of Rem since the episode included below is only the first half of OVA 1 since that was all that was released by AnimeCoalition. It is taken directly from laserdisc and the quality is very good. However since then the show has been rescued from obscurity and remastered for a dvd release in Japan. Currently a boxset containing all 3 episodes plus extras have been released to which it currently retails for around $120 although can be attained at a much cheaper price through a bit of searching.

Space Fantasia 2001 Nights is an epic and very serious 50 minutes space opera anthology OVA from 1987 based on the manga of the same name known as 2001 Nights which was actually released by Viz in the mid 90's. Similiar execution to Robot Carnival in that all the stories subtly fit together and unfold into a huge epic story.
The animation is typical high budget OVA standard made in the peak of the Economic boom. The detailed backgrounds and character designs are jaw dropping. These types of productions constantly remind me why i prefer watching OVA's to TV series.
I truly recommend everyone watch this, it's one of the best shows i've seen in a while. If you enjoy serious space operas like Legend of the Galatic Heroes then this is defintly one to watch. I'm adding it to my 'must have on dvd should it ever get a commercial release' list either in Japan or the US.
